Shoe Glossary

Brief yet thorough definitions of important footwear terminology.

Schuhwissen Glossar

I

Insole

A roughly 2.5- to 3.5-millimetre-thick layer of leather that extends from the toe of the foot to the heel. When you wear your shoes, your foot rests directly on top of the insole. As as result, the insole has a significant impact upon wearing comfort, determining the way your foot feels inside the shoe. The insole should be made of high-quality, vegetable-tanned cowhide.

Insole Channel

This term can refer to a diagonal cut that penetrates halfway through insole. The insole is cut on both sides and sealed after the shoe has been stitched together. This term can also refer to a leather ridge attached to the insole after it has been cut, on the side where the cut has been made. This leather ridge is attached to the shaft and welt with a welt stitch.
