N° 652 details

This Goodyear-welted Balmoral in black hearkens back to a long, rich history, and has none other than Prince Albert to thank for its existence. In 1850, Queen Victoria’s husband commissioned the infamous shoemaker Joseph Sparkes Hall with creating a comfortable hiking boot that he could wear in the Scottish highlands around Balmoral Castle as well as in the British court. And thus the Balmoral was born.

From hiking boot to gentleman’s shoe

Traditionally, the lower portion of the Balmoral’s shaft is made from a single piece of leather. This is not the case, though, with No. 652—the bottom part of the shaft consists of both the (comparatively larger) vamp as well as a (comparatively smaller) counter. Both of these portions are made from fully-dyed calfskin. This men’s boot also features a toe cap seam evocative of the cap-toe Oxford, a detail which lends the boot a playful touch. Meanwhile, the upper portion of the shaft is made of velvety black rough leather. In the US, shoes with a vamp cut are often falsely labelled Balmorals—Balmorals are actually a different type of shoe altogether.

No. 652 is a full-leather shoe in that the lining, insole, outsole, and heel are made of premium cowhide. The heel is secured to the shaft by means of 15 brass pins.

This black Balmoral is perfect for casual settings. It is also welcome option for relatively informal workplaces. Men with low insteps will find this modern lace-up boot particularly comfortable.

Boots

Boots

Boots have a shaft that reaches five to ten centimetres above the ankle. These shoes are sturdier than classic flat shoes, and offer feet better protection during inclement weather.

Classic Last

Classic Last

The standard British last form. Subtly and elegantly narrows at the front of the shoe, without sharply rising from the ground. The average width at the ball of the foot provides a great fit for average feet.

French Calf

French Calf

This shoe’s upper boasts premium, medium-soft calfskin. The technical term for this type of leather is ‘French calf.’ This type of leather is known for its flexibility, fine texture, and soft grain.

Velours

Velours

Processed velours is an extremely fine, fully-dyed type of rough leather that is taken from the flesh side of the hide. Velours is extremely soft and resistant to soiling. It is easy to care for; regular brushing with a suede brush suffices to keep your velours shoes in good shape.

General information about our boots

Goodyear-Welted

Goodyear-Welted

The gold standard when it comes to shoe manufacturing. Goodyear welting is a painstaking process that involves stitching the shaft and outsole to a thin strip of leather. Shoes made this way are extremely stable, durable, breathable, and easy to repair.

Handcrafted

Handcrafted

Mass-produced shoes are glued together on assembly lines. All of our premium, full-leather shoes, on the other hand, are handcrafted to the finest standards of quality. You can see and feel the difference.

Full-Leather Shoes

Full-Leather Shoes

The high quality of these shoes is reflected in their high leather content. Their uppers, lining, insoles, and outsoles are made from the finest leather. They even have leather heels, made by painstakingly stacking thin layers of leather on top of one another.

Construction

Construction

These shoes consist of roughly 65 separate parts. They took about 210 steps to assemble. We rely upon premium materials and traditional production methods to ensure that our footwear is of the absolute highest quality.

Gentleman's Corner

Gentleman's Corner

These shoes come equipped with a so-called "gentleman's corner". This is a small notch cut from the inside corner of the heel. This has a practical purpose—it prevents your trouser leg from catching on your shoe.

Breathable

Breathable

This shoe boasts a high proportion of leather, and has been assembled without the use of adhesive bonding—both of these factors ensure proper air circulation and prevent moisture from penetrating the surface. Dry, well-ventilated feet are healthy feet.
