The Origin of the Tassel Loafer
It was the Hungarian actor and gentleman Paul Lukas who made the tassel loafer acceptable for men. He had purchased a pair of classic Oxfords in Europe, which had small leather tassels (decorative tassels) at the end of the shoelaces. Lukas wanted to create his own version of the shoe and turned to the New York company Farkas & Kovacs in 1948, which produced a special variation for the Oscar winner, with the laces also running along the opening of the shoe.
Paul Lukas found the design of the shoes to be great, but they were uncomfortable and the fit was not perfect. Therefore, he took the right shoe to the renowned American shoe company Alden. Here, they made changes to the model he brought, using a penny loafer with its apron as the base. However, instead of the tongue, they made Lukas' shoe with a comfortable round last and added the leather strap with tassels only as decoration around the opening. The tassel loafer was born!
In 1950, the shoe was added to the range of the US manufacturer, where it immediately became a huge success, especially among students at elite colleges who saw the new design as a modern update of the well-known Penny Loafers. From then on, it didn't take long for the Tassel Loafer to become one of America's most popular luxury shoes, from New York to L.A.
