Oxford and Derby are the classic English shoes

Derby shoe conquered the world from England

The other classic English leather shoe is the Derby. Its origin is not entirely clear, but it is believed to be named after the English Earl of Derby. He lived in the late 19th century and, according to legend, had trouble fitting into his boots due to his corpulent appearance. A shoemaker helped the nobleman by making him leather boots that promised an easy entry. In fact, compared to the Oxford, it allowed for an easier entry into the shoes. The "Derby" was born and began its European triumph in shoe fashion.

Over the years, the term "Derby cut" has become established for shoes with an open lacing. In the case of the Derby, it has between three and five pairs of eyelets.

By the way: The Blucher has an open lacing just like the Derby. Therefore, it is often confused with the latter by non-experts. However, both shoe models can easily be distinguished from each other in their construction. The Blucher does not have any additional quarters.
