Loafers the classic casual shoe

loafer

For those who like to dress casually in their time off and who prize shoes that are easy to put on, there’s no better men’s shoe than the loafer. And who better to first catch on to the trend than students?

Since their invention in America at the beginning of the 20th century, loafers have held a firm spot in the pantheon of men’s fashion. Originally designed for college students, they quickly found popularity among men of all ages, thanks to their lightweight comfort and the fact that they’re easy to put on and take off. This is the casual shoe par excellence, perfect for those who prize shoes that are easy and comfortable to put on.

Loafer

The loafer is considered an offshoot of the moccasin

Loafers don’t have lacing or any other kind of closure, which means the wearer can slip them on effortlessly. They’re considered an offshoot of the moccasin; as with the moccasin, the shaft of the loafer continues down under the length of the foot and is sealed on top with a vamp insert. Unlike moccasins, though, loafers have a sole and a heel.

Since loafers do without lacing and boast a wider fit than most half-shoes (which makes them easy to put on), they’re widely considered a casual shoe in Germany. However, in the US, Japan and Italy black loafers are also worn at business functions.
