Number 459 details

The penny loafer is probably the best-known type of men’s slip-on shoe in the world. Originally developed in America at the turn of the 20th century, this comfortable slip-on shoe was first worn by college students. Their special way of wearing it led to the shoe’s name; before important exams, students would stick a lucky penny into the leather strap running across the instep. Goodyear-welted and handcrafted from premium leather, No. 459 is a luxe collector’s item.

Extraordinary penny loafer in burgundy shell cordovan

No. 459 features a U-shaped shaft insert and an upper made from premium shell cordovan, fully-dyed burgundy and sourced from Chicago’s famous Horween tannery. This extremely durably luxury leather is taken from the rear quarters of the horse. It is virtually impervious to creasing, and quickly recovers from small scratches. Shell cordovan is also known for its ability to repel moisture. On this model, the durable shell cordovan upper is perfectly complemented by a leather Rendenbach sole.

The penny loafer is traditionally considered a casual summer shoe. This Goodyear-welted, full-leather penny loafer in burgundy impresses with its premium cordovan upper and an overall elegant appearance. While No. 459 looks wonderful with a suit, its burgundy upper also works well with jeans and light summer fabrics in blue, grey, and brown.

Loafer

Loafer

These comfortable slip-on shoes were invented at the turn of the 20th century and are considered offshoots of moccasins. Like the moccasin, its shaft extends along the bottom of the foot and is sealed at the top with a vamp insert. Unlike the moccasin, the loafer features an additional outsole and heel.

Norwegian Last

Norwegian Last

This type of last is known for its solidity. It projects further upward than the lasts used to make Oxfords and Derby shoes—as such, it is less delicate in appearance. Shoes made with a Norwegian last are an excellent choice for those with a strong build and high insteps.

Shell Cordovan

Shell Cordovan

The demand for this premium equine leather is much higher than the available supply. Fully-dyed and smooth as glass, shell cordovan becomes even more supple with age. It is virtually scuffproof and highly water-repellent. It can take up to six months to produce.

Rendenbach Sole

Rendenbach Sole

For the past 140 years, the traditional Rendenbach tannery has used oak bark tanning to produce leather soles—the process can take up to nine months. The resulting soles are prized worldwide for their durability and water repellency.

General information about our exotic shoe collection

Goodyear-Welted

Goodyear-Welted

The gold standard when it comes to shoe manufacturing. Goodyear welting is a painstaking process that involves stitching the shaft and outsole to a thin strip of leather. Shoes made this way are extremely stable, durable, breathable, and easy to repair.

Handcrafted

Handcrafted

Mass-produced shoes are glued together on assembly lines. All of our premium, full-leather shoes, on the other hand, are handcrafted to the finest standards of quality. You can see and feel the difference.

Full-Leather Shoes

Full-Leather Shoes

The high quality of these shoes is reflected in their high leather content. Their uppers, lining, insoles, and outsoles are made from the finest leather. They even have leather heels, made by painstakingly stacking thin layers of leather on top of one another.

Construction

Construction

These shoes consist of roughly 65 separate parts. They took about 210 steps to assemble. We rely upon premium materials and traditional production methods to ensure that our footwear is of the absolute highest quality.

Gentleman's Corner

Gentleman's Corner

These shoes come equipped with a so-called "gentleman's corner". This is a small notch cut from the inside corner of the heel. This has a practical purpose—it prevents your trouser leg from catching on your shoe.

Breathable

Breathable

This shoe boasts a high proportion of leather, and has been assembled without the use of adhesive bonding—both of these factors ensure proper air circulation and prevent moisture from penetrating the surface. Dry, well-ventilated feet are healthy feet.
